Hollywood is buzzing about a funny girl from South Central let’s talk about why. ‘Girls Trip’ gave us more than just an instant black classic, (fine ass) Kofi Siriboe and a Pinkett-Latifah reunion I’ve been waiting on since ‘Set It Off’. The Malcom D. Lee comedy (re)introduced the word to the hilarious, Tiffany Haddish. Stealing the film, with her iconic comedic improvisation skills and her life lesson on grapefruit that viewers will never forget. Tiffany has caught the attention of all of Hollywood and here’s some things you may not know about our new favorite funny girl.

From Foster Care to Fame

Tiffany expressed in recent interviews that she was a product of foster care. Her mother suffered from mental illness after a car accident left her with brain damage. At only 10 years old Haddish was forced to raise her four younger siblings, while struggling to take care of herself.

“I was basically a 10-year-old mom,” Haddish told PEOPLE last year. “I remember being that foster kid and being like, ‘Man, I’m probably going to be in jail in two years.'”

When she was 15, she and her siblings were put under the care of her grandmother.

Comedy Camp Saved Her Life

Haddish claimed her behavior problems growing up. A fed up social worker offered Haddish a chance to go to the Laugh Factory Comedy Camp.

“Going to that comedy camp and having all those men tell me, ‘You’re beautiful. You’re smart. You’re talented.’ Like, for somebody to tell me that, even if they didn’t believe it or mean it, it was enough,” she said. “It was enough to light a fire.”

She Ready

Tiffany has appeared on The Carmichael Show, Key & Peele’s Keanu and a few comedy specials including her infamous Snoop Dogg’s Bad Girls of Comedy.

“It’s what I’ve been working for for 19 years now,” she says. “Just really been putting in all this work and the fruits of my labor are really starting to show.”

Girls Trip earned 30.4 Million opening weekend. Double what experts predicted for the film’s 20 million dollar budget.
